Right away: blot, don't scrub
- Blot with paper towels or a white cloth, pressing firmly to soak up as much as possible
- Don't rub or scrub, which spreads it and pushes it deeper
- Pour a little cold water on the spot and blot again
- Repeat until the towel comes up mostly dry
Treat the odor
Pet urine odor comes from residue that soaks into the carpet and backing. Enzyme cleaners made for pet urine are designed to break that residue down. Follow the label, let it sit as directed, and let the spot air dry.
What not to use
- Ammonia cleaners, which can smell like urine to pets and draw them back to the spot
- Hot water or a steam cleaner on fresh urine, which can set the stain and odor
- Lots of water, which spreads the urine further into the pad
- Strong perfumes that cover the smell instead of removing it
